Royal African Society, African Kingdoms

The African Kingdoms event is an evening of networking and discussion hosted by the Royal African Society to learn about approaches to teaching African history in schools. On June 20, they hosted their second instalment of the event at SOAS university, it was an evening of hope centred around the practice in the arena of African history. As partners of RAS, we attended along with other teachers, students and guests for an evening of connection, exchange and engagement with topics and ideas about African history.

Throughout the evening, attendees were given the opportunity to listen to teacher and student panels from a variety of schools coming together to share ideas and resources, and reflect upon the African Kingdoms A Level module created by RAS. Guests were then given a guided tour of the SOAS collection of African literature, journals and artefacts dating back to pre-colonial periods.

The mission of the Royal African Society is to centre African perspectives in global conversations and facilitate understanding and dialogue between people in the UK, Africa and the rest of the world. Here at The Black Curriculum we are proud to support that mission. "The Royal African Society was an evening of hope centred around the practice in the arena of African history. As students and practitioners I think it is our job to be brave and do the action, discuss challenges and improve as much as possible, which the evening gave us an opportunity to do."
