TBC Recruitment - Educators for NAS and Springboard REQUIRED

Role Purpose

The aim of this role is to provide young people with Black British history through confident, artistic and inspiring delivery – prioritising decoloniality and racially literate teaching and praxis.

We are looking for three Liverpool based Educators.

The educator role is pivotal within the delivery of Springboard workshops and supporting teachers in the delivery of the National Ambassador Scheme.

Role Objectives

To enhance and deliver the following key TBC services:

  • Springboard – delivering Black British History arts based (focusing on music and poetry) workshops to KS1 – KS3

  • Supporting NAS Coordinators (teachers) with questions and advice around the National Ambassador Scheme

  • Acting as a point of contact for NAS Coordinators

Key Details

  • Teaching experience in primary schools is a must and comfortable supporting KS3 teachers

  • 10 month freelance contract (September 2024 - end of June 2025)

  • Available to meet with teachers during school and after school time (8am-4.30pm) - in person and remotely

  • Available for team meetings and wellness check ins with Line Manager

  • Commitment to the development and success of all young people we work with.

Application Submission Process

If successful, as part of the interview process, you will deliver an in person presentation (15 minutes) on an aspect of Black British history of your choice. The aims of the presentation would be:

  • Creative and arts based

  • Intended for a young audience (KS1 - KS3) - your choice

  • About Black British History

  • An explanation of how your presentation could be extended into a full session (1-2 hours)

About The Black Curriculum

The Black Curriculum is a social enterprise established in 2019 aiming to empower all students with a sense of identity and belonging through the teaching of Black British history all year round. We work in and out of schools, teaching through a range of art forms to the country, all year round and not just in October. Our work is driven by the mission to make a lasting difference by working closely with educational establishments to fulfil our vision for every young person to learn about Black British history.

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about education, young people and Black British history to join our dynamic team. These Educators will teach and inspire the next generation through the provision of resources, lessons and training. This flexible role will allow you to gain practical teaching experience in a solutions-based organisation and make an impact in reforming the UK’s educational system.

What is Springboard?

Springboard is a free arts-based workshop programme that provides KS1 - KS3 students a space for self expression through music, poetry and Black British History.

Springboard aims to propel students’ curiosity in the arts and improve their awareness of self, through the teaching of Black British history in creative and engaging ways.

Springboard is delivered in schools, in person by The Black Curriculum (TBC) Educators. Schools that have signed up for Springboard can expect two in person workshops over the course of the school year.

TBC offers a range of workshops throughout KS1 - KS3 that schools can choose from to best suit their students. These workshops primarily focus on using literature and music as their means of educating. However the knowledge aspects range from migration, activism and pan-africanism. For example, students may learn about the links between activism and Black British History, through the means of protest poetry or independent publishing (e.g. Margaret Busby).

What is the National Ambassador Scheme (NAS)?

The National Ambassador Scheme (NAS) is an arts, heritage and cultural award for Year 9 to Year 11. The award is an indication that the participant is dedicated to the arts, heritage and culture.

NAS is an ASDAN accredited award and participants of the award receive a certificate and access to The Black Curriculum’s career hub. This provides them creative opportunities and propels them with access to creative spaces (university applications, workshops, work experience, lectures and more).

NAS runs from September (sign up period) – end of June. Students choose and start their project in October.

NAS is run by a NAS Coordinator (a teacher/member of staff). The NAS Coordinator is in charge of supporting students through the process and creating a space for them to complete their projects. The NAS Coordinator will have contact with a TBC Educator who will offer support and check in with them and the participants if any help is needed.
