Black History IS British History!
Black History IS British History - Written by Evelyne Gilles
Black history is integral to our present and future, yet it is often overlooked in education. Black Britons, from sailors to the Windrush Generation, have shaped this nation’s story, but their contributions are frequently omitted from the history taught. This erasure and lack of Black representation in education not only distort our understanding of the past but also send a damaging message, telling Black students that they don’t matter or belong, impacting their self-identity, confidence, and aspirations and creating barriers that affect their academic success.
Representation in education is vital for empowerment. It ensures that Black children, especially boys, see themselves reflected as achievers, leaders, and changemakers, fostering confidence and ambition. When they recognise their worth, embrace their identity, and feel represented, Black children gain the confidence to pursue their dreams and achieve their full potential.
The inspiration to write “Empowering Black Boys in British Secondary Schools” stems from two decades of experience teaching in London secondary schools. During that time, I have witnessed firsthand the systemic biases, lack of representation, and the significant challenges these create for Black boys in education. Those barriers not only hinder academic success but also impact self-confidence, aspirations, and long-term opportunities.
Packed with practical strategies, resources, and empowering insights, this guide helps parents equip Black boys to navigate and overcome educational obstacles. It’s about more than just academic success; it’s about ensuring they are confident, valued, and recognised for their brilliance and resilience.
Let’s break down barriers and create a future where Black boys are seen, empowered, and uplifted.
