How to speak to your young person about race (11- 16yr olds)

Tip 1: Be open and transparent.

Don’t shy away from the topic at hand, There are topics that are difficult for a variety of reasons -  although it might be uncomfortable for some, find opportunities such as events in the news for conversations with young people about racism. Discussing and highlighting these issues are the only way to keep everyone aware and educated on the inequalities that exist within our society.

Ask what they think and introduce them to different perspectives to help expand their understanding. It is important for young people to understand what is happening, therefore correct misperceptions and misinformation the world has about people who are of a different race.

Tip 2: Help to guide the conversation

Remember that young people often understand more than we think. It is important to include teachable moments in everyday conversations and discuss topical issues whenever they come up. Break down ideas into simple concepts. This includes giving both historical reasoning and real-life examples to every term or topic that you mention.

Tip 3: Listen and encourage

We must understand that our young people are growing up in a different racial climate. Young people this age will already have some kind of experience with race and or racism, so it's important to listen to them and speak to them about it in a way that is mature, sensitive and respectful. It can be triggering for young people so we must be empathetic and attentive to their needs.

Tip 4: Reflect on what you know

It is common for us to influence their experiences with our own, which may have been negative. Sometimes this is needed as we try to protect our young people from being exposed to racism and uncomfortable situations. It is important to have open talks with young people about race. Having honest and open discussions builds trust, Try to understand how they feel and what they know, and keep the conversation going.
